Boys & Girls Club Tournament Event Chair Martha Deichler and San Diego County District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond at the De Anza Country Club hosted fundraiser.

Despite the devastating fire last October, Ramien Shalizi, de Anza Country Club's General Manager, agreed with little hesitation to host yet again the Boys and Girls Club annual Golf Tournament. Ramien and his staff, including beloved Chef Kurt Hauser, put on a festive event outdoors with tables and umbrellas, complete bar, scrumptious buffet and gracious servers. It should be noted that de Anza covered all green fees for this event. Thank you very much, de Anza!

Not only did de Anza Country Club staff knock themselves out for the event, three local members of the Club were highly instrumental in raising funds and must be recognized and thanked: Kathryn White, Colleen Manzer and Lorraine Johnson.

These ladies flew into high gear collecting donations from local merchants and restaurants to use in our silent auction and opportunity drawing. Colleen even offered up an afternoon cruise on San Diego Bay in her Chris- Craft complete with wine, hors d'oeuvres and dinner prepared by fabulous local cook Kathryn White.

Our local Boys and Girls Club serves approximately 82 children after school until 6 p.m. with homework assistance, exercise, nutrition lessons and a state-of-the-art skateboard park. This number swells to over 200 when we include other events at the Club. Only 3% of the funds needed to run the Club come from fees paid by families, due to income levels. The Golf Tournament is charged with raising a substantial amount to keep our club's doors open. Our net goal this year was $110,000 and we met it!

Reaching this goal would not have been possible without the 90 spirited golfers who signed up to play, the 40 folks who paid for lunch, the numerous contributions towards the silent auction and paddle pledges and the Major Sponsors: Bob Payne Family Foundation, S. Hansberger Foundation, de Anza Country Club, Rams Hill Golf Club and West Coast General Building Contractors.

With Patsy Cline (aka Robin Young) crooning in the background and the gorgeous mountains silhouetted against the incredible blue sky, folks were in a generous and joyous mood. Borrego Springs once again brought out the best in people and Danny Sherlock, CEO and President of the Greater San Diego Boys and Girls Club, thanked everyone for their generosity in supporting our Club and assured everyone that all monies earned at this event stay in Borrego Springs.

We thank the Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego for always remembering our rural Club and for supporting us unconditionally! Danny Sherlock and his hard-working staff joining forces with Borrego Springs is a sure-fire recipe for success. Our children and families are the beneficiaries of this generosity and kindness.

With Much Appreciation,

– Martha Deichler

BSUSD School Community Liaison and Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament, Event Chair

– Sandy Hansberger, Event Co-Chair

Note: To all the local businesses, golf courses and restaurants who contribute year after year to so many fund-raising events, the town thanks you. You are the "wind beneath our wings" with your generosity and unwavering support. You never frown or say "no". New to this community of generous giving are Borrego Springs Resort GM Kevin Viggers and Solomon Bello and Chris Vassar of Epicurious Social Club. Gracias to you all!
