Seventy-Eight Pounds Seized

Within two days, El Centro Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint arrested two people attempting to smuggle drugs.

The first incident happened Tuesday July 9 at approximately 9:33 a.m., where a 29-year-old woman driving a blue Nissan Sentra approached the checkpoint.

A canine alerted agents to the vehicle where she was sent to secondary inspection for further investigation. While in secondary inspection, agents discovered several hidden packages inside the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.

The packages tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing 28.7 pounds with an estimated value of $66,010.

The second incident occurred on Wednesday July 10.

A 26-year-old man driving a red Ford Escape approached the checkpoint at 12:24 p.m.

After going through secondary inspection, agents found packages hidden in the vehicle’s spare tire compartment, and inside the gas tank. The packages tested positive for meth.

The total weight discovered was 49.6 pounds with an estimated value of $114,080.

The vehicles, drugs and suspects were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency.
