Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 checkpoint in Salton City arrested a teenager who was in possession of fentanyl and a loaded firearm in their vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 7:58 p.m. Jan. 3, when an 18-year-old male driving a white Volkswagen approached the checkpoint.

A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to the vehicle, and it was waved along for further inspection.

During the secondary inspection, agents found a package hidden on the teen, which was later to be determined as fentanyl. They also discovered a loaded .38 Special revolver.

The fentanyl weighed about three quarters of a poind with an estimated street value of $24,096.

The drugs, weapon and teenager, who was a U.S. citizen, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
