Last updated 1/24/2025 at 9:35am

Borrego Springs is without power as of Thursday Jan. 23 due to the high risk weather conditions requiring SDG&E to shutoff power.

SDG&E customers in multiple areas were issued a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) earlier in the week, giving time for people time to prepare, despite low weather conditions.

SDG&E also sent out texts, emails and phone calls to notify customers of the possible outage, also stating that power could be out for 24 to 72 hours.

Areas such as neighboring Warner Springs customers have been out since Monday.

As if the power going off wasn't enough, many AT&T customers are without service with the initial cause stated as "power failure" and an estimated repair time of Friday Jan. 24 4:30 a.m.

The Borrego Springs Library has opened up as a Community Resource Center in the area and will be open until 10 p.m. to provide helpful resources such as:

- Warming Items

- Water

- WiFi

- Medical Device & Phone Charging

- Snacks

- Ice

- Car Power Inverters & Small Solar Batteries

- Water Trucks for Livestock

- Up-to-Date Outage Information

The Library is located at 2580 Country Club Road.

Multiple businesses in Borrego also remained open with some limitations.

Open businesses as of Borrego Springs 92004 Posting on Facebook:

- La Casa Del Zorro restaurant and bar

Scott Mitchell of the Borrego Springs Resort posted on the Borrego Springs 92004 Facebook page stating that BSR was "operating on a back up generator" and they have "opened their 4,000 sq. ft. banquet room space, free of charge, for anyone needing a warm place to go during this time."

They also offered a discounted rate to local residents needing accommodations.

Power is estimated to be restored by 5 p.m. Friday Jan. 24.

UPDATE:

Power in Borrego Springs has been restored as of 9:30 a.m., earlier than expected. Zito customers, however, experienced a bit of trouble due to the company rebooting and resetting the system due to the outage. Internet was eventually restored. If your internet was not restored, it is suggested to reboot your modem or give Zito a call.

As of Friday Jan. 24, 8:45 a.m. – SDG&E has alerted customers in areas including Borrego Springs that weather and high fire risk conditions have improved and crews are inspecting power lines to make sure they are safe to operate and can be turned back on. This can take anywhere between a couple of hours to eight hours before restoration can be made.

From SDG&E: "With improving weather conditions throughout the region, SDG&E mobilized its workforce early Friday morning to begin ground and aerial patrols to inspect power lines and equipment in areas impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). SDG&E understands how challenging it is for customers to be without power and has deployed additional field crews and aerial resources to quickly and safely restore service."

"Patrolling and inspecting power lines are the first steps in the restoration process after a PSPS. Although inspections are underway, it can be difficult to predict how long an inspection may take, given the varied length of each power line, weather conditions and wind speeds, the terrain and whether aerial inspections are required."

The Borrego Springs Unified School District has canceled school for Friday Jan. 24 due to the continued power outage, and stated that further information will be provided when made available.

The BSCC Certified Farmers Market at Christmas Circle is still open as of Friday Jan. 24.
