A large-scale production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” will come to Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center (BSPAC) for four performances over the weekend of February 21. Directed by the author of twenty-one award-winning international bestsellers, Don Winslow, and produced by East County Performing Arts Association, the production promises to bring fresh energy to the timeless tale, with live musical performances plus stunning costumes and sets designed specifically for the BSPAC stage.

The cast’s twenty-five local actors and musicians hail from Borrego Springs, Julian and Ramona. When asked why he picked this play, Winslow said, “You start with casting and we had the cast for it. It’s obviously a classic play that people have known and loved for 500 years, and there’s a reason for that. It has drama, it has comedy, it has romance, it has action... it has everything.”

A part-time resident of Julian, Winslow directed Shakespeare productions in England long before developing his reputation as an internationally acclaimed author. He also has strong connections to Borrego Springs, saying, “I love Borrego. I’ve been coming down here for years. I love the theater here. It’s a little gem and I’m excited about bringing this show to this community.”

Step into a world of forbidden love, feuding families, and fate’s cruel hand in this bold new adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece.
