The Gallery at The Palms
Leslie Nemour's sophisticated, captivating, sensual art series, 'Sleepwalking,' is showing at the newly reopened gorgeous mid century modern Gallery at The Palms.
San Diego based Nemour was Professor, Art Department, Mira Costa College, Oceanside for 28 years. Additionally Nemour has enjoyed a distinguished art career showing at numerous galleries in Southern California.
In graduate school Nemour studied painting as film and film as painting. A creative symbiotic intrigue between film and the artist's art has continued.
Nemour describes referencing images from cinematic history to transcend split- second moments of a story into an otherworldly or fluttering existence.
Movie genres from the past and cinematic sources from the 40's and early 70's are referenced in her 'Sleepwalking,' series.
The right kind of film can stick with you for years, like a half remembered dream.
Leslie's inspiration lie's between where film and art meet, and how both art forms have been instrumental in inspiring and informing each other. The allure of the movies has inspired many an artwork. Film can represent an inner sanctum and have a magical function in life similar to art. In every painting there is story sometimes obvious or inferred with room left for the viewers interpretation.
Leslie describes her art. "In this series square compositions zoom into interior environments with fleeting figures entering or leaving the form. What's left is an animated space where functional and decorative objects, along with shadow reflection and swirling currents, reflect a residual energy."
Leslie also describes her Sleepwalking series as a," metaphor for moving through life with a lack of awareness of both the beauty and horror that surrounds us. An inspiring show.
Join the artist for ARTTALK Saturday Jan. 18, 3:30 p.m. at The Gallery.
Borrego Art Institute: Annual Contemporary Latin American Art
There are changes at BAI Cultural Center!
The Annual Latin American Art show was co presented by BAI Live Music. The addition of tables and chairs to the outdoor area makes for a comfortable setting for art lovers to relax and enjoy live music and if inclined to get up and dance. Featured was Mariachi Mixteco, always a favorite and the talented June Clivas's crowd pleasing music got everyone energized. In the future art openings at BAI will feature live music entertainment.
Additionally, BAI is partnering with various local wineries and wine brokers to offer a broader selection of interesting wine at shows.
Over three hundred people attended this art music experience.
Notable artist Jose Luis Nunez artwork is featured in the North Gallery. An avid plain air artist with over 50 exhibits in US and Internationally. His artworks center around California and the Southwest. Jose's compositions are structured around light contrast and his considerable developed sense of color values.
Tijuana artist Benito del Aguila's intriguing collage on 1896 newspaper, 'El Beso,' and, 'Luchada,' a collage/silkscreen were sold favorites. Anchoring the show was Benito's spectacular, 'Saint Sebastian,' also sold.
My favorite artwork in the show by Benito 'Tuhuana,' a collage on antique paper. Benito cleverly explores the art of collage utilizing vintage papers with mixed media touches.
Esau Andrade originally from Tepic Nayarit, Mexico comes from a family of folk artist's. His works are uniquely his own and convey an innocence and sense of wonder that makes his art so appealing to collectors. Esau's sold 'The Star Maker,' embodies his folk art heritage.
