Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 7pm – Casablanca – 1942 – Rated PG – 1h 42m

Casablanca, directed by Michael Curtiz, is a landmark American film set during World War II that has become one of the most beloved classics in cinema history. Starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine, a cynical American expatriate, and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund, his former lover, the film is set in the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca, where Rick’s nightclub has become a crossroads for refugees seeking escape from Nazi-occupied Europe. The film became a surprise hit due to its release shortly after the Allied invasion of North Africa.

Critically, it has been praised for its tight screenplay, iconic dialogue (“Here’s looking at you, kid”), and memorable performances by its stars and top tier supporting cast, including Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, not to mention the great Dooley Wilson as “Sam.” After a moderately successful opening in November of that year, Casablanca went on to win the 1942 Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and over time, it has been hailed as a quintessential Hollywood film. Its exploration of timeless themes like sacrifice, love, and duty have cemented Casablanca as an American cinematic treasure.
