Borrego Sun - Since 1949

Borrego Springs, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and the Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center lost a good friend earlier this month with the passing of Sam Webb. Sam and his late wife, Astrid, were Honorary Mayors of Borrego Springs (2003 – 04) and both were long-time Board Members and former officers of the Borrego Springs Civic Foundation. Sam and Astrid were long-standing dedicated volunteers at the Anza-Borrego Desert Stste Park Visitor Center and the Colorado Desert Archeological Society. Sam founded the Saharan Mustard Task Force in 2010 – 11 in response to an all-out invasion of the weed that decimated the annual desert wildflower bloom in Borrego Valley. The dedication and efficiency of these volunteers helped restore the natural balance and the groups volunteer efforts continue today. Sam and Astrid will be greatly missed by the community and the Park. A memorial service for Sam will be held this Friday, January 5th, at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Borrego Springs.
