More Kudos for Rams Hill

In addition to being ranked 4th on the Golfweek list of Best Courses You Can Play in California (trailing only Pebble Beach, Pasatiempo, and Spyglass Hill), and ranked 58th for Best Resort Course in the U.S., Rams Hill was recently awarded the distinction of being chosen as the Best Conditioned Course in San Diego County by Greenskeeper.org. The rating is based on input provided by golfers who play the courses.
We can confirm the quality of the Rams Hill course after playing 18 holes with General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Harry Turner and Club Pro Bob Gelesko on Jan. 16. My frequent playing partner John Peterson came along for the outing on just another beautiful 70-degree day in Borrego.
The criteria for selection regarding Best Conditioned Course in San Diego County are ones that every golfer appreciates: Firm, fast fairways where the mowing is consistent throughout; Greens that are firm yet receptive to a well-struck shot and at the same time fast and smooth where putts roll true; Bunkers that are will-raked giving all plays a consistent and fair lie; and Course Edges that are well-trimmed and edged.
On the day we played, all criteria were observed to be met, and with a Stimp rating that day of about 11, the greens were about as fast and smooth as one can handle.
“We’re very much like a championship course at this time, but still making improvements,” Turner said, such as filling in a few bare spots on the outer edges of several fairways. Another improvement isn’t so much golf-related as it is related to water conservation. They’ve just deployed a new computer/software program, at a cost of $7,500, for the sprinkler system that could save up to 30% of current water usage.
“We’re very honored to have been chosen as the Best Conditioned Course in San Diego,” Turner said. And judging from performance in the real world, the award to Rams Hill was well deserved.
Turner also announced a special discounted golf package aimed at the locals: $60 per player (foursome required) for a round of golf on Tuesday’s before 8 a.m., reserved in advance the day before via credit card.
