It’s still early in the 2017 – 18 golf season, but one player on the Golden State Tour is showing how to get off to a great start, and he did it at the de Anza Country Club Dec. 4 – 5.
Jake Knapp from Costa Mesa sank 10 birdies in the seeding qualifier on Dec. 4 (two bogeys on par-3’s) to shoot an 8-under par 63.
He then proceeded to whip the field in four consecutive match play rounds, the third round taking four extra holes for Knapp to finally win the tourney.
Knapp was ranked seventh amongst tour in money winnings going into this season, but if he has more games like at de Anza, look for him cash in big time.
Borrego resident Damian Telles, de Anza’s golf pro, was ranked second on the money list coming into the current season behind Moorpark’s Michael McCabe, but Telles finished 25th in the de Anza match play tourney.
Look for Damian Telles, Michael McCabe, and especially Jake Knapp in the de Anza Classic, starting February 28.
