El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine Monday Dec. 11.

The incident occurred at around 9:15 a.m. when a 26-year-old man in a 2012 Hyundai Accent approached the checkpoint. Before reaching the primary inspection area, a Border Patrol canine alerted agents to the vehicle.

After being referred to secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents closely examined the vehicle and discovered 24 packages hidden in the vehicle's gas tank.

Agents examined the contents of the packages, which tested positive for methamphetamine.

The total weight of the methamphetamine was 26.41 pounds with an estimated street value of $92,435.

Border Patrol agents identified the man as a United States citizen. Agents turned the man over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the vehicle and narcotics for further investigation.
