El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents near the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine Wednesday Dec 13.

The incident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. when a 24-year-old man driving a 2003 white Ford Windstar was stopped six miles from the checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine detection team was called to the scene to further examine the vehicle.

Border Patrol agents closely examined the vehicle and discovered four packages hidden in the vehicle's engine.

Agents examined the contents of the packages, which tested positive for methamphetamine.

The total weight of the methamphetamine was 8.95 pounds with an estimated street value of $22,375.

Border Patrol agents identified the man as a United States citizen. Agents turned the man over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the vehicle and narcotics for further investigation.
