Deep Pit BBQ for Labor Day
Last updated 8/1/2017 at 11:32am
80th annual deep pit BBQ in the east San Diego Mountains in Descanso September 3 Labor Day weekend.
Theme this year is Food, Fun & Fortune.
Food Fun Fortune History: FDR was the President when the first deep pit BBQ sponsored by Our Lady of Light Parish took place in 1937. Eighty years later, this east San Diego mountain tradition continues. The parishioners spend months preparing for the annual event. No less than 4 cords of oak fire wood, 1500 pounds of seasoned beef and seasoning will go into the special Deep Pit BBQ for 12 hours. Plates piled high with BBQ beef and all the trimmings are available. This year more than 2000 visitors from all over San Diego and Imperial counties will attend.
Deep Pit BBQ beef, mountain ranch beans, handcrafted slaw and western rolls, drinks, and homemade apple pies. The event will have many local vendors offering crafts, gifts, toys, jewelry, and clothes, all lovingly offered by our friends and neighbors in the Descanso, Pine Valley, Julian, and Alpine communities. Dancing to the tunes of the Smith & Western Band, enjoying the Beer Garden and shopping at Grandma’s Attic (gently used items from A – Z at bargain prices). Kid’s games and fun activities for the little ones are a huge part of the fun. Raffle prizes all day. Info: 619-445-3620.
When: Sunday, September 3, 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
