Salton Sea - Deputy Injured by Suspect

A Riverside County sheriff's deputy was injured Friday, May 5, in the Salton Sea-area community of Mecca, while attempting to detain a man who authorities say had been causing a disturbance.

Alejandro Parra De La Riva, 29, of Thermal, was arrested on suspicion of assault on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury to a peace officer on May 5, 2017. The suspect, Alejandro Parra de la Riva, 29, of Thermal, was not injured, the release said. He was arrested on suspicion of assault on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury to a peace officer.

A bystander helped the deputy end the fight and arrest the suspect a Sheriff's Department news release said. The deputy was treated at a hospital for unspecified injuries and released.

Deputies had responded to a report of a man being aggressive toward an employee inside a business and stealing some items. A deputy saw De La Riva in the area of Fourth and Coahuilla streets and tried to detain him, the release said.
