Plans for a new Borrego Springs County Library, Community Park, and Sheriff Substation are making their way through the San Diego County planning process. The Borrego Springs Library, a $9.95 million dollar investment by the county in Borrego Springs, is expected to be operational and ready for occupancy in late 2018.
In preparation for the new library, the Friends of the Library Board Members toured many of the eleven new libraries built throughout the county by the award-winning San Diego County Library. In addition, the Friends have worked closely with County library staff and administrators to address the specific uses of our local library and ways that a new county library facility can serve the needs of our small, rural community. Additionally, we have provided feedback to project managers concerning our desert environment and climate, unique in San Diego County.
Several public meetings over the past two years were held to gather input from the community regarding the park and the library. More recently, the county added a new sheriff station and public restroom to the project, and determined that both facilities will be located on the park site.
The county is now in a formal process that culminates with the selection of a Design-Build team to design and construct all the elements of the project: the library, park, and sheriff station.
As part of that process, and before the final selection, Borrego Springs residents will be able to preview the three preliminary designs for the entire project. The current estimation is late January for the proposed designs to be displayed at our branch library for one week for the purpose of review and comments from the community. Proposals will include the exterior views, interior layout, color schemes, park amenities and landscape.
Following the public presentation of the proposed designs, the formal process continues into early spring when the county makes the final decision and awards a contract.
