California state corrections officials are investigating the slaying of an inmate during a fight between nearly two dozen inmates at the Calipatria State Prison. Located near the Salton Sea, the facility houses nearly 3,800 inmates.

Officials said Monday that a 54-year-old inmate was stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen, chest, head and back by two other inmates Sunday morning. A second inmate, age 25, was taken to a hospital with puncture wounds to the back but is expected to recover. The incident occurred as 22 maximum-security inmates were fighting in two different areas of the prison, according to officials and Officers later found four inmate-made weapons.

Officials have yet to release names but the slain inmate was serving a life sentence from Los Angeles County for murder and armed robbery.
