Let's support the BWD

As an almost thirty year Borrego resident and homeowner at Rams Hill, I am familiar and concerned with the water issues in this community. In my opinion, our present water board is handling the current crisis exceptionally well.

Unlike today’s politicians, rather than kicking the can down the road, they are making the hard choices to the benefit of us all. As an example, in my community at Rams Hill, the BWD has been working with the new owners since 2013 to reduce water usage. They and the owners agreed to reduce golf course water usage from approximately 1,2000 acre feet per year to 800. In addition, the BWD required the owners to follow agricultural land equivalent to its agreed golf course water usage. The combination of Rams Hill’s lower water usage on the golf course and its fallowing of citrus farms reduces the USGS identified Borrego aquifer overdraft by 5 percent to 10 percent. It’s important to note that this agreement was reached back in 2014, long before there was a state mandate.

I believe the BWD is a responsible steward for the valley and has been proactive in getting users to reduce their consumption. The new USGS model and state mandate will force the Borrego valley to address its water usage and recharge issues. While the state mandate is recent policy the BWD has been working for many years to resolve these same issues.

Let’s continue to encourage and support the BWD as they work toward these common goals.
