Salton Sea State Recreation Area provides a new public access point on its eastern shore by reopening Varner Harbor and Launch Ramp. This new boat launch ramp is one of two public access points for recreational boaters in the Salton Sea. You are invited to attend a ribbon cutting event scheduled for Thursday, March 24 at 2 p.m.

WHAT: Ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reopening of a boat launch facility at Salton Sea State Recreation Area

WHEN: Thursday, March 24 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: 100-225 State Park Road, Mecca, CA 92254

WHO: Representatives from California State Parks, Salton Sea Action Committee, Sea and Desert Interpretive Association and construction company DEVCO.

Varner Harbor and Launch Ramp had been closed for three years. California is excited about the new recreational opportunities that this new public access point will provide to the public. Visitation at Salton Sea is swiftly increasing as more Californians realize its recreational potential. More than 200,000 visitors are expected annually in California's largest lake and the third largest saline lake in the nation.

The re-opening of the Salton Sea's boat launch ramp is thanks to a public-private partnership between California State Parks, Salton Sea Action Committee (SSAC) and the construction firm DEVCO. The dredging and repair work was performed by DEVCO, along with assistance from State Parks' heavy equipment operators. The Sea and Desert Interpretive Association will be there to help setup for the event.
