The Plein Air week at the Borrego Art Institute (BAI), and the painting done out at various places in Borrego, was a huge success. This was their tenth annual year of hosting this event. Fifteen artists participated in the show.

They arrived on Saturday, Feb. 28 to register and started painting right away. The artists were all over town at various locations, painting their entries. The most used medium was oil, with one artist using knife oil and one using pastels. In watching them paint, it seemed to be with such ease and grace. What talent.

In places like mobile home parks, the residents would watch in awe and provide the painters with ice water. Even some visitors in one park were inspired to do Plein Air paintings of their own.

The Saturday night Gala, held at the BAI, was crowded with very appreciative and enthusiastic people. Wine and cheese was served, leading up the presentation of the awards. Midway through the reception, Shannon O’Dunn, juror of the show, presented the awards.

The awards presented included three honorable mentions; John Barry for Glory, Paul Kratter for Morning Wash, and Rita Pacheco for Air Plein. First Place and Best in Show was awarded to Jim Wodark for Colors, Second Place and People’s Choice Award was awarded to Danny Griego for On a Dark Desert Highway, and Third Place was awarded to Thomas Kitts for Making the Bend.
