Day 1 Leaders L - R Butch Vanderpool, Damien Telles, Tony Franco

In what appears to be a match of home field advantage, members of de Anza Country Club, the Borrego Springs Resort (the Resort), and Rams Hill Country Club are all vying for supremacy in the yearly Borrego Cup event. Playing a Stableford format, where points are awarded for each player on each hole (1 for bogey, 2 for par, 3 for birdie, 4 for eagle, and 5 for double-eagle), the de Anza team on Day-1 at their home course led by 18 points over the Resort team, thanks to 40 points each by Butch Vanderpool and Damien Telles, but Tony Franco from the Resort team also scored 40 points (see photo).

The Resort players came back strong on their home course on Day-2, including a whopping 46 points by Rick Howell who used his eye-popping golf attire (see photo) to distract his opponents from his three natural birdies for net scores of three eagles. The Resort team now leads the tournament by 26 points over de Anza and 39 points over Rams Hill. The final match is at Rams Hill today (Friday), so we’ll see if home field advantage for the Rams Hill players is enough to overcome that 39-point lead.

Final results and photos of the winning team will be posted on Saturday.
