Barrie Keith Morris, 59, from Corona has been identified as the motorcyclist who was killed in a tragic head-on collision with another motorcycle in the desert near Borrego Springs on New Year’s Day.

Morris was in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park with family and friends on holiday, the county Medical Examiner’s Office said Tues, Jan. 12.

Investigators said Morris was leading a group of motorcycle riders from the Big Bear Trail Riders motorcycle club, when he created a thick cloud of dust after he slowed down and turned back up the road after missing his turn-off. Morris and an oncoming rider failed to see each other until it was too late to avoid a collision and were thrown off their bikes.

Others in the group called 911 about 3:45 p.m. and began CPR on Morris until Paramedics arrived. Despite their best efforts, Morris was declared dead, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The other rider was flown to a Riverside County trauma center with critical injuries.
