Borrego Springs - Motorcycle Fatality - Update

Update - A fatal motorcycle accident, Sunday Jan. 3, resulted in the death of Yuma winter resident, 68-year-old Canadian Larry Ferunik.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Ferunik was attempting to negotiate a left-hand curve at a speed of approximately 35 to 40 mph and went wide, causing his motorcycle to drift onto the shoulder of the roadway. on Route 78, east of San Felipe Road, at about 10:40 a.m.

The motorcycle continued into the dirt shoulder before ejecting Ferunik onto the west lane, where he was struck by the left side of a trailer being pulled by a 2006 GMC pickup truck.

Despite attempts by paramedics who arrived on scene, they were unable to revive him. The investigation into the accident concluded that while Ferunik was wearing a helmet, it was not a Department of Transportation approved helmet.


A motorcyclist was killed in an accident Sunday morning Jan. 3 on eastbound State Route 78 between Scissors Crossing and Yaqui Pass in Borrego Springs.

Traffic was shut down for a couple of hours in both directions of the highway following the incident which was reported two miles east of San Felipe Road.

"It was a solo motorcycle with one confirmed fatality," California Highway Patrol spokesman Robert Catano said.

The identity of the crash victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
