El Niño - Inmate Work Crews

Last updated 12/16/2015 at 10:28am

Supervisors voted Tuesday, Dec. 15 to allow CAL FIRE to deploy inmates in the event of flooding and other non-fire emergency-related work.

Concerned over the forecasted rainfall conditions that El Niño may bring to the county, officials have set up a direct agreement between the County and CAL FIRE San Diego Unit. A single inmate work crew, can fill approximately 300 sandbags per hour. With nearly 500 inmates on local work crews managed by the CAL FIRE San Diego Unit and located at four different camps, the deal will allow immediate access to the inmate crews for help.

At present, the County is required to make a request with the state government and then wait for assistance. The arrangement will be similar to the one currently used to gain assistance from inmate crews on other types of work, including firefighting and weed abatement.
