‘80s surf star David Eggers passed away at his Salton Sea home Monday, Nov. 16, of a probable heart attack at age 45.

Having walked away from surfing and moved to the Salton Sea to run Capt’n Jim’s, his dad’s roadside bar he had put behind him the past as surfing’s ‘cautionary tale’.

The San Diego surfer went from earning lucrative sponsorships to heavy drug use and within a year had dropped out of the tour. It was after moving in with his father, that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which he had successfully been taking medication for since his early 20s.

“David was the barkeep,” family friend Gary Linden said. “He kept everything clean and ordered...and had his routines and his group of friends. The David we knew was gone a long time ago, but he’ll be greatly missed.”
