Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup developed a plan, while still a teenager, to remove the 7,250,000 tons of plastic garbage from the world’s oceans in only five years. This will be the world’s first ocean cleaning system and is scheduled for deployment in 2016. The feasibility of deployment, off the coast of Tsushima (an island between Japan and South Korea) is currently being researched.

The system will span 2000 meters, becoming the longest floating structure ever deployed in the ocean, and will be operational for at least two years. Tsushima Island is evaluating whether the plastic can be used as an alternative energy source. The Ocean Cleanup’s mission is to remove plastic pollution from the world’s oceans and this first deployment will represent an important milestone.
