A bill making competition cheerleading a high school sport was signed into law on Wednesday, Oct. 7, by Gov. Brown. According to bill AB 949, the State Department of Education must develop guidelines, procedures, and safely standards with the California Interscholastic Federation for high school by July 1, 2017.

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego said “Today the governor has ensured these athletes will earn the respect and have the safety standards they deserve. Equality comes in many forms and today it came in recognition that a traditional female activity can also be a sport.” According to the legislator, cheerleading is the cause of almost two-thirds of catastrophic sports-related injuries involving female high school athletes.

States already recognizing cheerleading as an official sport are Michigan, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Alaska and Virginia.
