Defensible Space

Cal Fire conducts about 20,000 fire prevention inspections each year. Inspectors are chiefly looking for defensible space. Cal Fire inspector, Chris Hull said, “It’s very important in the first 50 feet to have a good fuel reduction making sure no dead, dying plants are close to the structure.” The second 50 feet outward can contain lower cut grasses and trees with the lower branches removed so they’re not touching the ground. “It’s a continual fight. You have to work on it every year,” according to Hull.
