Last updated 9/4/2015 at 11:19am

Border Patrol agents seized several boxes of candy laced with methamphetamine Thursday, Sept. 3, at the checkpoint on Highway 86 near the Salton Sea.

Drug-sniffing dogs alerted agents to a white 2012 Nissan Frontier being driven through the checkpoint by a 48-year-old man and his 47-year-old female passenger.

The boxes of Tamarind candy labelled "Dulces de Tamarindo" were located in the bed of the truck and when tested, tested positive for methamphetamine.

The man and woman, both Lawfully Admitted Permanent Residents, the vehicle and the candy were turned over to the DEA for further investigation.
