Drone Law Approved in Poway

The Poway City Council voted on Tuesday to restrict drone flights over the city. Originally planned to restrict drone flights near wildfires, the new plan proposes a no drone zone for about 75 percent of the city. Mayor Steve Vaus said Poway would be the first city in California to pass a law like this. According to Vaus, the currently proposed ordinance is the only way to get something on the books before the fire season peaks. “The Santa Ana season is on us, which means higher fire risk season, and we need to be able to act quickly.” Drones have been repeatedly reported flying near fires and interfering with fire-fighting efforts. The ordinance remains in effect for 45 days and then the council either renews or revises it.
