20,000 shade balls were released onto the Los Angeles Reservoir on Monday as the last step in a $34.5 million water quality protection project. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's water control plan is about $250 million cheaper than an alternative method considered. 96 million shade balls have been released onto the reservoir at the Van Norman Complex in Sylmar. The water in the 175-acre reservoir will now be protected against dust, rain birds, wildlife, and chemical reactions caused by the sun. The 36 -cent black, plastic shade balls are expected to keep around 300 million gallons of water from evaporating per year.
