This story was featured in the Borrego Sun on March 1959.

"De Anza Desert Country Club came of age February 7 with the formal opening of the second nine holes - a gala event that drew more then 325 visitors to the valley, including over 190 golfers.

Despite snow and rain storms over most of the country, only sprinkles fell on Borrego, and the visitors were treated to some spectacular mountain colors as the sun broke through the heavy clouds.

Climaxing the event Sunday afternoon a gigantic rainbow arched its way across the entire northern sky.

Gene Andrews of Los Angeles, former National Public Links champion, led the field of golfers with a two-under-par total of 142 for the 36-home tournament.

Golfers were lavish in their praise of the course, especially of the newly-opened lake and its groves to tamarisk trees.

Despite the large number of golfers, which required the first foursome to tee off at 7:30 a.m., the tournament was run off without delays under the supervision of pro Frank Morey Jr.

The large number of visitors heavily taxed all housing accommodations in the valley, but one way or another all found comfortable shelter for the night.

Highlighting the social events, which also included many private Borrego residents, were a chuck wagon breakfast and outdoor luncocktail parties in the home of cheons at the De Anza Desert Country Club and a Saturday night barbecue beef dinner at the Desert Club.

Tiny Beverly Burnand did a heroic job in the preparation and general handling of these events with the assistance of her committee of the Mesdames Jack Benson, Anne Cargill, Jack Russell, Donald Castle, John Lee, Denis Sach, Stuart Haseltine, C E. Wright, Paul Evens, Fred Woods, Herman Nelson and Merrill Harrington.

La Jolla Country Club furnished the largest contingent of visiting golfers. Also represented were Lake Tahoe, Stockdale, Irvine, Bakersfield and Virginia Country Club at Long Beach."
