A fire near Idyllwild in July 2013 lasted for sixteen days, destroyed 23 buildings and instigated road closures due to flooding. The cost of fighting the fire was estimated at $25 million and has been determined to be human-caused, probably by faulty electrical equipment. Three groups from Mountain Center as well as CalFire are suing the owner of the property, along with his caretakers. The property owner that is blamed for the 27,531 acre Mountain Fire is the founder of Saudconsult, an engineering firm and architectural company in Saudi Arabia.
