Former Borregan Maris Brancheau became a member of the California Bar Association on June 4, during a swearing in ceremony held in downtown San Diego. Brancheau was admitted as an attorney at law with permission to practice in any California state court and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

She is one of about 40 percent of the candidates who passed the February 2015 California Bar Exam. A former staff reporter for the Borrego Sun, Brancheau is now officially a licensed attorney. Her new title is Maris Brancheau, Esquire. Her tag line is "Protecting People, Animals and the Environment."

"Thank you to my adopted hometown of Borrego Springs for all of your support and encouragement. Today I accomplished a life-long dream. With this achievement comes great responsibility, and I as I took my oath as an officer of the court, I cried tears of joy," Brancheau said. "Not far from my mind is the beauty and peace of Borrego Springs and the memory of former Sun Editor Judy Winter Meier. I know she would have shed a tear or two, as well. I carry a piece of Borrego Springs with me wherever I go and I hope to do my part to protect the desert in the years to come."
