Borrego Springs - Glenda Retiring

It is the end of the season and all the snowbirds have flown north, south, east and west, back to their summer nests to coolly contemplate the warmth of next winter and spring flowers. What they probably won’t see when they return, however, is Tumbleweed. The two stores in The Mall will be closing as of May 31, with a sale ongoing until then. The Garden Store next to the Center will remain open. Glenda Garmon, originator and driving force behind the Borrego Springs landmark, which opened twenty years ago, has decided to retire and spend time relaxing near her beach house in Mexico. She and her husband, Bill, came to the desert with friends for the first time twenty-two years ago.

After falling in love with Borrego, they began musing about buying a lot and moving to town. They were introduced to Pat Patterson, a realtor, bought a lot that day and spent the next two years planning and designing a house. She and Bill had talked of a store back in Laguna where she had a colorscaping (landscaping with flowers indoors and out) business. When the store space became available, they saw the perfect chance to start a business here.

Glenda was off and running and hasn’t stopped since. First came antiques and various clothing and boots, knick-knacks, custom made furniture, jewelry and art. The second store, now a display space for larger furniture pieces and an art gallery, was originally a children’s store. She says that one of the best things about the store is the traveling around and having adventures finding things to add to her shop. In addition to sunbathing she plans to continue traveling but without the stress of finding and shipping pieces’ home.

Happy retirement!
