On Feb. 12, 13, and 14 SEAthletes held their first annual race, North Shores Xtreme, to save the Salton Sea. It was a weekend long event at the Salton Sea State Recreation park, filling every campsite at the park and bringing in 250 athletes.

On Saturday, Feb. 13 the competitions were open for the public to enjoy. More than 600 spectators and 150 children from the Boys and Girls club attended. Athletes arrived with outrigger canoes, stand up paddle canoes and kayaks to compete in each individual category The short course was a five mile loop; the long course a ten mile loop. Stand up paddle canoes took the five mile course; the outriggers the ten mile course. There was no admission fee on Saturday, Feb. 13. Events began at 8:00 a.m. ending with a barbecue after 4:00 p.m. During the day there were Seaside vendors, food trucks, artists, DJs and dancing.

This weekend showed that there is no reason why this spectacular body of water and its beaches should not be enjoyed, which is the purpose of the SEAtheletes event. You can take your boats out, you can camp, you can swim and you can fish.
