Utility companies across Southern California will continue to pay solar-powered homes and businesses full retail rates for the electricity they generate thanks to a last minute victory for clean energy.

The California Public Utilities Commission voted 3 – 2, Thursday, Jan. 28 in a last-minute development favorable to the rooftop Solar industry.

Solar customers will not have to pay for the upkeep of transmission lines despite objections raised by Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric that argued that Solar customers aren't paying their fair share to keep the electric grid running.

"Our decision today is a big step forward toward giving California consumers more choice, more control and more responsibility over their energy choices," said Commission President Michael Picker.
