According to County Sheriffs, 23-year-old, Palm Desert resident, Carl James Dial Jr., was identified by investigators as a suspect involved with this incident. Dial was located and arrested in the city of Palm Desert. He was subsequently booked into the Riverside County Jail, for arson, hate crime, and burglary.

Cal Fire was on scene Friday Dec. 12 at a mosque in Coachella, after a fire broke out just after noon local time. Officials on scene believe the structure was hit by an arsonist and was “fire-bombed.” Witnesses were praying inside at the time of the fire and described hearing a “loud boom” and seeing flames.

The fire was extinguished by 12:09 p.m. and contained to the lobby of the Masjid Ibrahim mosque.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department issued a news release late Friday, stating that investigators “believed this was an intentional act potentially resulting in a hate crime, and utilized all available resources in an attempt to identify and locate the suspect.”

The release states “A person of interest was quickly identified and was subsequently located and detained pending further investigation.”
