Anyone with an unwanted weapon can now trade it for a Wal-Mart Stores Inc. gift card. The San Diego County Sheriff's department will be collecting the unwanted weapons on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station, 182 Santar Place. The Sheriff's Department asks the public to bring their guns in the trunk of their vehicles, then a uniformed deputy will provide more information and make the exchange. No questions will be asked. All the weapons collected will be destroyed. In previous events held in 2013, deputies collected 1,102 guns.

Gift cards go from $50 to $150. A rifle or shotgun is worth a $50 gift card. Handguns go for $100, while assault weapons are worth a $150 gift card. People can trade more than one gun, but the amount cannot exceed $200 in gift cards.

The money to buy the Walmart gift cards came from asset forfeiture funds from the Sheriff's Department, Oceanside and Carlsbad Police Departments.
