Legislation was signed on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to make California’s equal pay laws tougher. Gov. Brown signed the California Fair Pay Act at the Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park in Richmond, saying, “This bill is another step toward closing the persistent wage gap between men and women.” The legislation (SB 358) was supported by numerous state and local leaders, including U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein who said, “Women in California earn 84 cents for every dollar earned by men. Even when women perform the same job as men, with the same level of education, the wage gap persists. We can’t allow this discrimination to continue.” California now requires equal pay, regardless of gender, for substantially similar work.
