San Diego Water Rates To Increase

Last updated 9/29/2015 at 10:07am

Water customers in the city of San Diego will begin receiving notices of a proposed water rate increase. Staff say the several reasons for the increases include an increase in its own rates, the city's aging water infrastructure that requires improvement projects, and conservation. Yes, conservation. San Diego used 26 percent less water this summer than in 2013 and its state mandated target was only 16 percent. Conservation doesn't lead to a lowering of water bills because revenue comes from water sales. City staff are asking the City Council to approve a series of five rate hikes, which would increase the cost of water 41 percent by July 2019.
