An excessive heat warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 9:00 p.m. Monday. Strong high pressure will build over Southern California, creating extremely hot weather for inland areas this weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be the hottest days with temperatures 10-15 degrees above the norm. A slight cooling trend is expected on Monday and then more significant cooling for Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect 120 degrees in the desert this weekend and take extra precautions if you work or spend time outdoors. Drink plenty of water and be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:

Confusion, dark-colored urine, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headache, muscle or abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, pale skin, profuse sweating and rapid heartbeat.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:

The hallmark symptom of heat stroke is a core body temperature above 105 degrees but fainting may be the first sign. Other symptoms include throbbing headache, dizziness, lack of sweating despite the heat, red, hot and dry skin, muscle weakness or cramps, rapid heartbeat, rapid shallow breathing, behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation or staggering, seizures, and unconsciousness.

Without proper prevention, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke which can damage the brain and other vital organs and even cause death.
