Two More Going to India

Two more names have been added to the list of students who will travel to New Delhi, India this year. Ireland Ward and Edwardo Rivera are the new students who will accompany the Garcia Twins, Leyssa and Leslie, in their two-week trip overseas.

During their trip, students will experience a new culture, language, meet with fellow students, and create memories.

The Garcia Twins and the two new students wrote essays to be selected for the trip; they were the runners-up for the competition as part of the Interact Club. Due to a participating high school’s inability to send their students abroad, these two spots opened up for students at Borrego Springs High School. Krishna Arora, the trip leader, contacted the school about the opportunity after the international students from India received a warm welcome to Borrego back in April. They visited the campus from five different schools in New Delhi as part of a two-week trip to San Diego County. The international students were also part of the Interact Club at their schools.

The Interact Club is a service and leadership club at the high school level. The club is affiliated with the Rotary Club; the junior version of the latter and any student interested is welcomed to join. Rachel Wann, teacher adviser for the Interact Club, said that the Rotarians help them by raising money and offering advice and leadership.

The final amount for the trip for four is expected to be $8,000. The plane ticket for each student is priced at $1,400, and the insurance and credentials add up to $600 per student.

The Garcia Twins have already raised $1600 for the trip. Two anonymous donors have provided $500 and total funding for one student. Adding up all the raised money, they are still $4,000 shy.

The $500-anonymous donor would like someone to match his donation. The rest of the money is needed by August 14, when plane tickets have the best prices. Anyone wanting to help the students broaden their horizons can submit a tax deductible donation. Donations can be sent to The Borrego Springs Rotary Foundation, P. O. Box  1250, Borrego Springs, CA 92004.
