Major Search for Alien Life Is On

At the launch of the Breakthrough Listen initiative, funded by Russian Silicon Valley entrepreneur Yuri Milner, British cosmologist Steven Hawking said “In an infinite universe, there must be other occurances of life. Either way there is no bigger question. It’s time to commit to finding the answer, to search for life beyond earth.” The Breakthrough Listen project will use some of the biggest telescopes on earth searching for radio and laser signals deeper in the universe than ever before. Milner, a former physicist said the scan would collect more data in one day than any previous year’s search. This program will be fifty times more sensitive and cover ten times more of the sky. The project is conjoined with the Breakthrough Message initiative which is a global competition with a possible $1 Million prize to come up with the best human message to send ‘out there.’ Ann Druyan who sent music on the Voyager probes of the 1970’s said “We’d want to know their history, social forms, how they understand the origins of the universe...” She thought, however, a first message of “Hello” would be a good start.
