Fukushima Daisies

Some residents of Japan are busy posting photographs of deformed daisies that many believe are related to the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown of 2011. "Radiation being present in the environment is a plausible explanation" says Todd Forest, the New York Botanical Garden's vice president for horticulture, "but not necessarily the only explanation for the phenomenon." He goes on to say these fairly common deformities in flowers near Fukushima could also be caused by a random mutation, insects, diseases or even physical injury to the plant. Joe Cook, chair of the Sierra Club in Norfolk, VA said, "We believe that people's gardens may be very telling. We look to plants to see effects before we see them in people."
