Drug Smuggling Through Ports of Entry to the U.S.

The third busiest port of entry in the nation is Calexico. Just a decade ago, it was mostly marijuana and cocaine being smuggled across the border, but these days it’s chiefly heroin and methamphetamine. Some drug traffickers are using ultralight planes, drones and even high-powered catapults to get the drugs into the U.S. The El Centro Sector of the Border Patrol has operating stations in Calexico, El Centro, Riverside and Indio. Checkpoints on highways 86 and 111 near the Salton Sea are some of the busiest in the state for locating undocumented immigrants and illegal drugs. Mexican and Central American drugs that get through these checkpoints then spread toward major U.S. cities such as Los Angeles. Mexico has become the top foreign methamphetamine supplier to the U.S. since 2007, and local checkpoints are considered the last line of defense against these illegal drugs.
